The Jeep Compass / Patriot. The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV introduced by Jeep in 2007. The Compass, along with the related Patriot slots below the Jeep Wrangler as an entry-level sport utility vehicle, and is one of Jeep's first crossover SUVs.

In 2011, Jeep redesigned the Compass to more closely resemble the Grand Cherokee, while keeping its own identity. The 2011 Jeep Compass received a revised suspension for better handling, a revised interior with more standard equipment, and host of options including continuously variable transmission fitted with a low-range setting, all-terrain tires and an increase ground clearance of a full inch.

Like the Compass, the Jeep Patriot shared the Caliber platform, but it also had “real Jeep” capabilities in a Trail Rated model, and a toughened body to deal with off-road duty. With styling similar to the 2008 Jeep Liberty, the Patriot was close in many off-road clearances but had better gas mileage and a lower price. Testers were surprised by its rock-climbing, trail-traversing, and stream-crossing abilities. The body was similar in exterior size to the old Jeep Cherokee.

In 2011, the body was “cleaned up,” with corners rounded off, and the back muffler mostly covered or blacked out. Revised front and rear fascias, a body-color grille, and an increased (by 1 inch) 4x4 ride height. Ride-and-handling was refined through retuned steering and suspension systems.
