From Farm Spec to Coffee Icon

Transforming a 2003 Caledonian Blue Defender 110 TD5

Some projects are just special, and this one ticks the box.

This low mileage (2003) Land Rover Defender 110 TD5, finished in Caledonian Blue is a rare thing these days. Professionally maintained and already converted into a fully working mobile coffee truck, it started life as a functional, but very agricultural looking workhorse for the British Royal Navy.

It came to us with one goal:
to turn a basic spec Defender into a modern, reliable, brand-ready coffee icon. Everything added can be removed and put back to standard at any point. So not to ruin the original integrity of the vehicle.

The Starting Point

Under the skin this Defender is already a fantastic base. The TD5 engine is known for its durability and simplicity, making it ideal for a working vehicle that needs to start every morning without drama. The coffee conversion was already completed to a professional standard, meaning electrics, plumbing, interior lighting and layout were all in place.

But visually, and in a few key mechanical areas, it was still stuck in its previous life.

Faded exterior trims.
Basic steel wheel
Old stickers
Oil leaks and misting in the engine bay

That is where we came in.

Visual Transformation Begins

The first phase was about giving the Defender a clean, modern and premium look while keeping it true to its heritage.

We supplied and fitted:

  • Gloss black front grille
  • Gloss black wheel arches
  • Gloss black alloy wheel nuts
  • Locking wheel nut set

This instantly changed the stance and presence of the vehicle. The Caledonian Blue paint pops against the deep gloss black details, giving it a much more modern OEM-plus look while still feeling unmistakably Defender.

It now looks like a vehicle you would expect to see parked outside a boutique coffee roaster, not a muddy field.

Mechanical Reliability Upgrade

Looks are important, but reliability is everything when you are running a business from a vehicle.

During inspection we found the compression control valve was misting the engine bay with oil. This is a common TD5 issue that can quickly turn into a mess and cause other problems if left untreated.

We supplied and fitted a new MG/Rover compression valve, stopping the leak and restoring proper crankcase pressure control. It is a small part, but it makes a big difference to cleanliness, reliability and long term engine health.

This is exactly the sort of thing that separates a project build from a properly sorted working vehicle.

Ready for Branding

With any nmechanical issues addressed and the visual refresh complete, the Defender was fully de-stickered. The body is now clean and ready to be prepped for its new coffee brand identity.

That blank Caledonian Blue canvas, combined with the gloss black accents, will give the new livery a crisp, high-end finish when it is applied.

Follow the Journey

This Defender is more than just a vehicle. It is a business, a brand, and a rolling statement.

We will be following this build as it progresses through branding, final detailing and launch. If you want to see how a classic TD5 Defender can be transformed into a modern, reliable and profitable mobile business, stay tuned.

Follow along for the journey!
