Friction caused by metal rubbing against metal generates heat, and metal expands when it heats up. For typical combustion engines, multiple pistons work together at extreme temperatures in air-tight cylinders to generate the drive to propel the vehicle. To minimise damage to the engine, it is vital that the engine is cooled and that friction is minimised. 

Engine oil serves both of these purposes by not only lubricating and cooling metal surfaces, but also by drawing away dirt, carbon and metal particles to help keep the metal surfaces clean. Over time, as more particles are drawn away from the engine, the engine oil will gradually become less effective which will put your engine components under greater strain.

To assist and prolong the effectiveness of your engine oil, an oil filter is fitted to help draw abrasive particles out of the engine oil. This can be effective for several thousand miles, but eventually the filter will become clogged and less effective at cleaning the engine oil. Therefore it is good practice to perform an oil change where both the oil and oil filter in the engine are replaced. 

For many there will be no noticeable difference in the driving performance from doing this but the life of the engine will be considerably prolonged as a result, helping to maximise the value of your Land Rover while minimising the possibility of expensive repairs later on in the vehicles life.

Regular oil changes are particularly important if your Land Rover has long service intervals or if mileage is either very high or very low.
